The new epidemic of Coronavirus, or COVID-19, has been confirmed 329 cases in New York City and claimed the lives of 5 people in total in the city, all of whom had underlying health issues, as the New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Sunday.
It is worth noting that the nation’s largest public school system, with 1.1 million students in New York City, will begin to largely shut down this week, and for a period of 2 weeks, in what is the city’s most aggressive and disruptive effort to slow the spread of the notorious virus.
Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said on Sunday that public schools in Long Island and Westchester County will also close this week, and ordered New York City school officials to develop a plan within 24 hours on how to offer child care to students of parents who work in essential industries such as health care and to provide food to students who will need meals.
And while the schools will be closed on Monday for all students and staff, teachers will be asked to report to work later in the week for training on how to provide remote learning, according to Mayor de Blasio.
De Blasio noted that the goal is to reopen all the schools on April 20, though he said that could be overly optimistic, and there was a strong chance that the schools would not reopen at all this school year.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo reported Sunday that 729 coronavirus cases have been confirmed in New York State.
USA cases reached 3,313 while number of deaths 63.
